Just like the letter E is one of the most versatile letters in the alphabet, so too is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This line of luxury cars comes in sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon body styles, with a range of engines that cover all bases, from fuel-sipping diesel to a monster V8 that makes 577 horsepower in the AMG E63 S. According to the professional reviews and data that drive our rankings, any E-Class model is an excellent choice for a luxury car, thanks to its potent powertrains, opulent interior, strong safety scores, and top-notch predicted reliability rating.

While many luxury midsize cars, particularly models from other German manufacturers like the Audi A6or BMW 5-Series, make their mark by putting the “sport” in sport sedan, the E-Class doesn’t focus on sharp handling. The performance of most E-Class models (aside from the high-performance AMG model) is comfort-oriented, making the E-Class a posh and refined motoring partner, rather than a canyon carver. Inside, the E-Class has a large back seat, sophisticated design, and the kind of cabin materials you’d expect from Mercedes.

If the E-Class has one shortfall, it’s its starting price: The E-Class’ base price is $52,650, which is the highest in the class. That may not be an issue for some luxury car shoppers, but you should know that other highly ranked luxury midsize cars, like the Cadillac CTS, Audi A6, and BMW 5-Series, have lower starting prices.

No matter which E-Class model you drive, it’s going to have a good powertrain with lively acceleration from a stop and plenty of passing power on the highway. The diesel-powered E250 BlueTEC makes 195-horsepower from its four-cylinder engine, and the E350 sedan has 302 from its V6. Trading up to the E400’s biturbo V6 gets you 329 horsepower, and the AMG E63 S gets you 577 horsepower. These numbers are the same for the E350 and AMG E63 S wagons. The E400 coupe and cabriolet have 329 horsepower from its biturbo V6, and the E550 coupe and cabriolet has a 402-horsepower V8. The E250, E350, E400, and E550 all come with a seven-speed automatic transmission.
